This is
to explain to enquirers, especially those engaged in family
history research, how to access information relating to St.
Matthew's Church.
The Church currently holds very little information on its
own premises. There are current registers of banns of
marriage, marriages conducted, baptisms, confirmation, and
funerals, but most of these relate to the present and very
recent past, probably no more than 15 to 20 years.
All older material relating both to individuals and to the
parish is deposited in the Ripon & Leeds diocesan
archive which is managed and maintained by West Yorkshire
County Archive Service.
St. Matthew's records are deposited with the Leeds office
of the Archive Service at 2 Chapeltown Road, Sheepscar,
Leeds LS7 3AP. Telephone 0113 214 5814. The Church’s
reference is RDP 19.
If your enquiry relates to a recent event for which the
Church still holds the register, we will be able to supply
you with a copy of a certificate for a modest charge. If we
no longer hold the register you will need to contact the
Archives Service who should be able to supply you with what
you require. You can contact them by phone, or at
www.archives.wyjs.org.uk
or
email them at
leeds@wyjs.org.uk
They
will also be able to advise you about how to proceed
with other interests or enquiries relating to your
family history. This is not, on the whole, something
which the Church is able to do.
The amount of material deposited with West Yorkshire
Archives by the Church is quite considerable, so the more
information which you are able to supply, the more likely
it is that they will be able to help you find what you are
looking for.
We hope that this information sheet has made the situation
clearer and that you will be successful in your search.
Please let us know if there is anything further we can do
to assist.
